LIFF27 – Day 1: Gravity (Opening Gala)

So my pass is charged up and ready to go. I have a stack of tickets. Let the mental fortnight commence. I’m no expert film critic nor am I particularly a film buff but LIFF is the time set aside for overdosing in cinematic loveliness. I’m planning on blogging each day…lets see how long that lasts!

Gravity (2013) (3D)

IMDb entry for Gravity

The Blurb

“Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone – tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness”

My Thoughts
Confession time. I haven’t seen a 3D film since my childhood (that’s pretty long ago for the record) so I was unsure what to expect and in a way I’m still a little blind in terms of comparing this to other recent 3D films in terms of effects. However, I was blown away by the visual quality of this film and I certainly think it would lose a lot if not viewed in 3D. The space scenes were beautifully mesmerising and in typical Hollywood blockbuster style there were twists & turns and tension throughout. There is a level of emotion here though and it’s pitched perfectly, moving without being cloyingly melodramatic. A little over-Hollywood in how the story plays out (no spoilers) for my liking but a good rollercoaster of a film with amazing effects.

Rating Out of Ten 8

Everyman is a great cinema. Particularly for us lankier humans; lots of leg room, comfy seats. Oh and a bar. Might need that to get me through the 4 hour epic later in my schedule!
