After Lucia (2013)

IMDb entry for After Lucia

Trailer

The Blurb

“Alejandra and her dad Roberto have just moved to town. She is new at school, he has a new job. Starting over is sometimes complicated when you have left so much behind.”

My Thoughts

The central theme here is bullying. And some pretty extreme bullying it is too; physical and sexual, it makes for some uncomfortable viewing at times. Well-shot and well-acted, particularly by Tessa La. Let down by some unrealistic events but still a great watch (although I doubt you’ll want to watch it twice; harrowing as it is at times)

Nebraska (2013)

IMDb entry for Nebraska

Trailer

The Blurb

“An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.”

My Thoughts

Every year at the festival I discover a couple of films I’ll rave about to anyone who’ll listen. Last year they were The Hunt, In The House and Amour. Nebraska is certainly on that list for 2013. Beautifully shot in black and white this film is visually stunning. The acting is sublime, particularly from Bruce Dern who portrays the central character, Woody, struggling with Alzheimer’s. This film is touching and heartwarming with humour throughout; I love Kate’s wit, straight talking and constant hilarious commentary on everyone and everything (her goodbye to an old boyfriend in the cemetery is one of the funniest). One criticism; felt a tad too long. Could maybe have done with an extra 15 minutes shaving off in the edit. One of my films of the year: see it!
